Van Cleef & Arpels unveils “From the Earth to the Moon” Collection

Van Cleef & Arpels unveils

The “From the Earth to the Moon” collection from Van Cleef & Arpels was amongst the hot favorites at the Only Watch 2011 auction. A space theme, accented with inlays of jade, agate, meteorite and champlev-style enamel are some of the key attributes of the Watch.

Inspired by Jules Verne’s “Poetic Complication”, the watch actually sports a space capsule which stands for the retrograde minutes. The working can be best explained as “Positioned on the right of the dial, it sweeps downwards, from zero to sixty. It then returns to its starting point after the sixtieth minute. On the left side of the dial, a star indicates the hours, in an upward movement. It returns to its starting point after the twelfth hour.”

Van Cleef & Arpels Cadrans Extraordinaires Animal Watches

Van Cleef & Arpels Cadrans Extraordinaires Animal Watches

The new dial creations Van Cleef & Arpels has in store for everyone. They have an ongoing collection they call the “Cadrans Extraordinaires” which refer to the dials being… extraordinary. Last year a major theme of the dials was Butterflies. This year, for the lady’s models, animals are still in. The focus is on the Arctic and the Africa. The dials are really incredible works of art. Each represents hand-engraved 18k white gold figurines and scenery skillfully done using precious materials and complex processes. The watches are 38mm wide in 18k white gold cases with diamond decoration.

This will be a visual journey through the collection. Don’t forget that the dials take a lot of time to complete. Some of the animal characters look better than others, but the backgrounds are universally stunning. There is an amazing amount of color and depth to them, especially because they rely on a lot of enameling and mother-of-pearl.

One other theme that is important to note is the concept of mother and child. Each of these dials has a mother animal with her young. The idea is to have the watch owners acquire the pieces and think of their children when wearing the watches. Each of these Van Cleef & Arpels watches is limited to just 22 pieces and contains manually wound Swiss mechanical movements.

The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels will showcase more than 300 timepieces, fashion accessories, design drawings, images from the firm’s archives and, of course, an abundance of jewelry in six themes that reflect its legacy: Innovation, Transformation, Nature, Exoticism, Fashion, and Personalities.

The Innovations category highlights the brand’s Mystery Setting, a 1933 patented technique in which stones are cut to fit a metal grid so there is no visible metal setting. Among the standout Mystery Setting pieces is a ruby Peony brooch, circa 1937. In the Fashion theme are five minaudi¨res, including elaborate jeweled models and the brand’s first 1930s piece inspired by Florence Jay Gould, wife of the American philanthropist Frank Jay Gould. The exhibit’s Transformation portion features a 95-carat yellow diamond bird brooch, whose wings become a set of earrings. Exoticism and Nature show the recurring influence of travel and natural inspirations on classic Van Cleef & Arpels motifs like the butterfly, and Personalities will demonstrate the influence the house has had in American society through famous patrons like Elizabeth Taylor.

BurJuman Luxury Mall Creates ‘Fishing’ Ads

BurJuman Luxury Mall Creates 'Fishing' Ads

High-fashion BurJuman has come up with a series of equally high-fashion print ads to encourage its wealthy clientele to start fishing for the various brands that the mall houses. With brands like Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Christian Lacroix, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels up for grabs, being wealthy is the greatest blessing. Unless, that is, you’re only going window shopping.

The BurJuman Luxury Shopping Mall’s latest ad campaign has as its slogan, “Catch of the festive season”. Unfurled in December 2010, the ads announce, “Fashion is for the taking”. Each of the ads has an editorial photograph of a high-fashion model holding a fishing net full of high-fashion items. The photographs are arresting, easily making the BurJuman Mall ad campaign, one of the catchiest fashion ad campaigns of the season.

Set in the heart of Dubai, the BurJuman Luxury Shopping Mall is one of the most luxurious fashion destinations the world over. The mall is spread over a whopping 800,000 square feet of shopping area and boasts of as many as 300 leading stores certainly the stuff of fashionistas’ dreams.

Last year, we read about the luxury shopping yacht SeaFair that docked along the Florida coastline. Shopping at the BurJuman Centre may not be as unique an experience as shopping on a yacht.

van-cleef-arpel-balloon-watch.jpg
There are watches that are too hard to explain. Then there are watches that are too hard to get. Not this Van Cleef & Arpels thankfully. Called the “Five Weeks In a Balloon”, this new piece from the French exquisite jewellery and watchmaker debuts at the SIHH 2011 in Geneva (January 2011). Inspired by the world famous fictionalist Jules Verne and his extraordinary voyages novel by the same name, the beauty of this watch is its presentation of the theme. The dial of this watch is decorated with champlev enamel and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The fascia depicts a hot air ballon taking flight into the air of Zanzibar. The hours and minutes are indicated by the retograde movement of the balloon’s anchor and a bird in flight. And if you, like us, love fairytales, owning this could be akin to having a story in hand always!
