Rinspeed iChange Concept car

iChange 1.jpg

From the gloriously fertile mind of Frank Rinderknecht comes the Rinspeed iChange, a shape-shifting zero-emissions concept car. As its name suggests, the iChange actually morphs its body shape depending on how many people are going to be onboard, thus optimizing its aerodynamic profile around the passenger load that is called for.

The Swiss auto tuning company claims “In seconds a streamlined one-seater sports car transforms into a comfortable car with ample room for three. The trick: At the push of a button the rear end of the teardrop-shaped car magically pops up.” Anyway, the iChange is powered by an electric motor mated to lithium-ion batteries available in two different stack configurations, one for short- and one for long-distance. Both choices will apparently be charged by any electric power source including solar. The motor produces 150kW, giving the car a top speed of 220 km/h (137 MPH) and a 0-to-100 km/h (0-to-62 MPH) time of slightly more than four seconds “” thanks to a six-speed gearbox borrowed from the Subaru WRX.

And of course, this being a concept car, the key and every other control function is replaced by an Apple iPhone. Yes, that includes the “next-gen” Harman/Kardon “infotainment system” which includes an ability to display directions in a “realistic 3D view.”

Veritas to launch RS III at this years London Salon Prive

web580-veritas.jpg

Veritas is back with the long-awaited RS III, which will be officially unveiled at this year’s London Salon Prive in July. The open-cockpit supercar is a revival of the 40″²s-era BMW racing team, spearheaded by a crew of enthusiasts dedicated to making the most visceral, back-to-basics driving machine known to man. With a choice of two BMW M-sourced powertrains “” 480hp V8 or 600hp V10 “” the Veritas hits 60 mph from a standstill in the three-second range en route to a top speed over 200 mph with either engine and no electronic aids.

With a list price starting around $375,000, only 50 examples will be produced, and the first one has finally arrived. The car’s speed is also thanks to its lightweight design. No hood or canopy and a liberal use of carbon fiber has the vehicle weighing in at just over 2,500 pounds. What about that design, eh? It feels odd without a full front seat considering the driver is off center, yet that’s also sure to grab eyes. There is only one rear view mirror, placed in a wired position, in the middle of the car just beside the driver.
