Pangea Ship Company Lucid Marine To Build In the U.S.

The Fort Lauderdale-based Lucid Marine Group is launching a new venture to build superyachts in the U.S. Rusty Preston, formerly of Westport Yachts, and Jeffery Ferguson, former vice president of Christensen Yachts, recently joined Lucid with the goal of developing a new line of semi-custom megayachts. The company also created the Pangea Ship Company, a division that will focus on custom yachts 200′ and larger, to be built at Oregon Iron Works’ (OIW) Swan Island Shipyard in Portland. Lucid Marine President Barin Cardenas says the U.S. offers unique opportunities to address the world’s current backlog in very large yacht orders, with technical expertise that an attractive exchange rate makes more affordable to international buyers.

After multiple visits to shipyards in the U.S. and abroad, Barin and his partners selected OIW, an industrial shipyard with a commercial marine division, founded 1944. With 300,000 sq. feet of manufacturing space, deep water access and technical expertise that earned OIW contracts for the conversion of the space shuttle launch complex, foundations of the new San Francisco Bay Bridge, and demonstration craft for the U.S. Navy, Barin says the shipyard has a unique way of addressing complex manufacturing processes and a solid engineering expertise that will help make Pangea competitive. OIW manager, who see in this new venture an opportunity to diversify its activities, plan to hire specific staff to handle yacht projects.

World’s Largest Open Yacht

The well-heeled superyachtsman can sit buried behind tons of glass, steel or he can be a man and fight it out with the sea, salt and sun in an open yacht where there’s still some interaction with the elements. Of course that doesn’t have to mean sacrificing much in the way of luxury “” especially not with the Mangusta 165. The world’s largest production open yacht at 49.9 metres, one is now listed for sale on JamesList via the Rodriguez Group for $29.5 million. The craft breaks the open yacht record previously held by Rodriguez with the Mangusta 130″².

The 165 can hit a top speed of 33 knots with its twin MTU 16V 4000 M93 engines producing 4556 hp. The interior of the yacht, first shown at the Salon Nautique in Cannes, features five staterooms and is finished in a luxe mlange of neutral fabrics and dark woodwork. Icon Yachts Unveils 62M

Three years after it opened for business Netherlands-based luxury yachtbuilder Icon has unveiled its first completed craft, a sleek 62-metre wavesplitter that’s already turning heads in the industry. The dark-hulled ship with its white tiered superstructure carries on in the fine Dutch tradition of superyachts with style to spare. British yacht design firm Redman Whiteley Dixon worked on the exterior with a brief from the owner to keep it minimal and unburdened by lots of bits hanging about everywhere. RWD came up with retractable navigation lights and flush life rafts for a streamlined hull form.

The Icon 62 features both a a dive club / gym at the transom as well as a “beach club” room featuring light-colored wood, a stainless-steel wall, and off-white lounges. The owners’ suite has private stairs, 180-degree views of the water and its own outer patio. Straight lines predominate throughout the interior which is cosseted in earth tone materials like silk, wool, leather, velvet, glass and polished marble. The owner also had the interiors designed to accommodate his impressively scaled if not altogether excellent collection of modern art, including an unfortunate four-story-high installation behind the yacht’s rear staircase.

Simply red with Ellix Too

Aldo Arcangioli, head of Charterbay, was quoted as saying that “Ellix  Too  is  the  second  in  the  ISA’s  155″foot  470  series  and  is  a  truly  stately  sea  giant,  with  interiors  and  exteriors  styled  by  renowned  yacht  designer  Walter  Franchini.  The  stylish  sundeck  of  this  elegant  beauty  will  be  one  of  the  most  coveted  spots  to  enjoy  the  excitement  on  the  track”. To me, I was mostly taken aback by the bold use of color. Superyachts, regardless of how much their brokers would like to tell you otherwise, do have a tendency to look alike. For this alone the Ellix Too should be applauded.

The Ariete Primo, a luxurious yacht disguised as a tug boat

As I’ve stated in the past, one issue that I have with many superyachts is that they have the ugly habit of reminding of eachother. White, sleek, streamlined, top performance, unique, like no other, artisanship, fully customizable, innovative, workmanship. Tired already? There’s only so many superlatives you can promote a boat with. Luckily, there’s no need for that drivel this time around. In the spirit of the “Mustardo” comes the 44m Ariete Primo.
