Christies to auction Princess Diana’s ancestral home’s artworks
Come July 6th, Christies Old Masters Sale will auction paintings from Princess Diana’s family estate.
As a part of the $45million clear out of the Spencer family’s Althorp estate, the paintings that are set to be auctioned include a painting by the Flemish master Peter Paul Ruben that was in the family home for over 200 years. Estimated to fetch between $12million and $18million, the painting painted in 1613 or 1614 is titled Å”A Commander being armed for Battle. Also, interestingly, it is being said that the bearded figure in the painting is Emperor Charles V.
The auction will also include the painting, “King David” by Baroque artist Il Guercino that had been in the possession of the Spencer family. This painting is expected to sell between $7.5 million and $12 million.
According to the trustee of the late Princess’s estate, the clear out is to ensure the financial future of the Althorp estate, which also explains why highly priced furniture – porcelain and horse-drawn carriages – and precious paintings are also being offered or auction.
