Maharaja Express: Royal India on wheels
In a move to attract affluent foreign rail enthusiasts, Indian Railway minister, Mamata Banerjee launched the all new Maharaja Train service at the Kolkata Railway Station on March 20.‚
The luxury train called Å”Maharaja Express includes 23 well-decorated carriages, equipped with individual temperature control systems, environment-friendly toilets, live TV sets, DVD players, internet and direct dial telephones, and all food and drinks are complimentary.‚
The four categories of carriages are as follows: junior suite for $800 per person, deluxe cabin for $900, deluxe suite for $1400 and the Presidential Suite for $2500. ‚ ‚ ‚
This service is the product of a joint venture between Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Cox and Kings India called Royale Indian Rail Tours Ltd. ‚
According to Ms. Banerjee, this train service is a gift to those who want to savor royal India and can afford it.
