Dual Cut transformable foam block

Hong Kong designer Kitmen Keung has created a transformable foam block with only two cuts for Belgium design brand Sixinch.

Splitting a raw rectangular foam block with only two L-shaped cut lines, Dual Cut is a transformable furniture piece that employs the simplest production processes true to the materials in use with minimal wastage. It features two ergonomically comfortable seat back angle options of 6° and 23°, and the multi-formation ability to form a one seater with a side table, a chaise lounge or a corner table. It also easily forms a neat, compact parcel for convenient storage and transportation. Dual Cut is available in Light Grey and Dark Grey with a 3-layer-system coating making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Balance animals the Duckster and the Stardust

The balancing animals the duck Duckster and the horse Stardust are designed by Ulrika Liffner and Josefine Wahlstr¶m for The Snowroom.  The animals are made for preschools as well as for waiting areas and for the home. The ambition was to keep motor practice fun and allow the children to be innovative in their play with these. Adults can help children reach their full potential through practicing balance together with them.

The balance duck Duckster is designed for children between the ages of 2-4. The younger child can start practicing by sitting at the back of the duck while secured in its stand in the shape of a wave. The stand give support to prevent the rocking function until the child can reach the floor on both sides on the duck by itself. An adult should at all times help the younger child to practice balance on these animals. The Stardust horse is meant for slightly older children from the age of 3-6. This horse is higher and more of a challenge to climb. When the child sits at the back of the horse lifting both feet it is a wobbly ride and gives a good balance activity. Holding both feet on either side of the horse gives more stability.

The balance animals are fun and functional products for preschools for example and come in happy coloured nylon fabrics as standard, easy to wash. But since we design furniture for public spaces it is obvious for us that children also often need their own space next to the adult environment. When waiting at the bank or at the hairdressers the kids need something more than a box with broken toys Duckster and Stardust can be ordered specially in wool fabrics in many colours and therefore be matched up with textiles in the lounge area.

Elian Cycles artisans driven by a sense of tradition and an eye for improvement

Elian designs and builds bikes for people who appreciate craftsmanship. Classic bikes with a modern influence. Not because the market wants it, but out of a personal need for stylish and sporty transportation in the city. It all started with the Elian 01-Cargo, a lightweight carrier cycle which, thanks to a steel frame structure of CroMo, is very strong. This concept is also extended to the second model, the 01-commuter, a sportive city bike, which uses the same structure at the rear. Smart re-use is a characteristic of the approach of Elian, where creativity and functionality are more important that innovation. Each bicycle gets its own number and is assembled to ones desire. The starting point is always that they would love to ride on the bikes themselves. To test out the bikes, you need only go to the website to make an appointment and in the near future bikes will be available through local shops in various cities. Through the production of their own frames in their workshop and direct contact with the end-user, one can expect high quality within a reasonable budget. The goal is a sustainable alternative to the current mass production and disposable bike culture.

Green lighting for the garden

Today’s gardens have become a veritable oasis of experience where we are able to enjoy some peace and quiet as well as the surrounding nature. Designer furniture, music and lighting have all become part of our personal exteriors. Modular Lighting Instruments is now launching seven outdoor designs that become one with the greenery that they light up thanks to the use of LED.

Outdoor lighting adds much to every garden, providing atmosphere and safety throughout all seasons. As well as having an architectural design, high quality outdoor lighting also meets the most stringent quality standards when it comes to being waterproof and durable. Modular Lighting Instruments has added a third feather to the bow of their outdoor designs: green lighting in the form of LED, fluorescent and discharge lights.

The ‘Industry’ pendant light

The other day we wrote about Swedish architect and designer Jonas Wagell and his research around cutlery. Now we would like to tell about his ‘Industry’ pendant light which is a large but light-weight, collapsible lamp. The structure consists of a knock-down  aluminium frame with an attached nylon diffusor, similar to a photo studio soft box. With a simple operation the structure is cladded or basically dressed with an upholstered fabric shade, that not only reflects light but also has sound absorbing properties. The ‘Industry’ lamp provides a very soft and generous light and is typically equipped with a standard 18 Watts low-energy light bulb. Despite the large width of 80 centimeters across, the lamp weighs in at just about three kilograms. Furthermore, the simple and clever construction allows for flat-packing and vouches for cost-efficient and sustainable shipping.

A sofa with a slender and strict language

Mono is one of the latest design from Anderssen & Voll for LK Hjelle. Mono was presented last month at The Stockholm Furniture Fair. The slender and strict language of the sofa is like an echo of the architecture. Hidden padding and a flexible back provides a high level of comfort.

Mono means simple and simple is exactly what this sofa is. Its flat surfaces give it a natural expression and due to its small dimensions, it requires only minimum space. The system is made up from a chair, a 2-seater and a 3-seater.
