The Oceangoing Audi

Yachts can be inspired by many things. At the recent Antibes Yacht Show at the International Yacht Club d’Antibes and Port Vauban in the South of France which traditionally ushers in the opening of the Mediterranean yachting season, Dahm International showed one inspired by the Audi TT. Apparently there was just something about the “purist driving machine that combines the performance of a sports car with a unique design language.” The Dutch shipyard based the Red Sula on its Jongert 3200M, a sophisticated 32.5-metre aluminum-hulled sloop.

Naval architect Tony Castro collaborated with Italian Giugiaro Design on the sleek, eminently seaworthy and speedy long-distance sailing yacht equipped with state-of-the-art technology and able to be handled by a small crew. The lower saloon is connected to the deck saloon in an open-plan arrangement, creating a large living and social area with a panoramic view. The spacious owner’s cabin and the twin guest cabins are located aft and were designed to ensure maximum privacy for all with accommodations for six in total.

Silvestris 23 Sports Cabriolet

When designer Maarten de Bruijn decamped from Dutch sportscar marque Spyker a few years back, most people assumed he’d stick with road going vehicles. Wrong. Turns out De Bruijn’s new passion is speedboats “” with more than a touch of sportscar style. De Bruijn’s’ new brand, Silvestris Haute Motive Concept, just unveiled its first motoryacht with a tip of the hat to automotive legends: the Silvestris 23″² Sports Cabriolet. The result is akin to an ocean-going Porsche.

The “Cabriolet” moniker comes into play as the cabin’s rooftop can be opened or closed like in a high end convertible. Two more passenger posts “” a rumble seat if you will “” are controlled via a remote-operated hatch. Finishing touches include vari-coloured sea-water resistant leather and aluminum body panels riveted and bonded to a tubular space frame. And what’s under the hood, you ask? Your choice of two Volvo diesel engines, one Volvo petrol engine, or the top of the line Silvestris 8.1L V8 made by Bones Marine. The latter puts out 560hp (417kW) through its single prop stern drive system, propelling the boat to speeds in excess of 55 knots 100km/h.

Chris-Craft’s New Lancer GT

Florida-based Chris-Craft, famed for its classic mahogany hulled powerboats first produced in the 1920s, mixes its watersports with motorsports in its latest model, the Lancer GT. The company will start taking pre-orders soon for the 20-foot runabout, priced at approximately 65,000. Though it harkens back to Chris-Crafts golden oldies, the boat is actually based on a concept originally developed with automotive giant GM, who helped add speed to style.

With what they”ve termed future engine technology from Mercury Marine, the Lancer GT is equipped with a 377 Magnum engine kicking out around 325 hp for an impressive top speed of about 70 mph. The craft”s state-of-the-art components include a digital dash and throttle, and the cockpit would not be amiss in an open-topped sports car. The demo model features a cherry red hull set off by a beige leather interior.

Rodriguez Collezione 40 Series Superyacht

High-tech Italian shipbuilders Rodriquez Cantieri Navali have unveiled their new Collezione 40 series aluminium-hulled superyacht designed by Filippo Rossi Associati architects. The sleek, elegant four-decked craft has a 39.9-metre full-displacement hull and can reach a maximum speed of 17 knots, powered by twin Caterpillar C32 Acert diesel engines. She has a range of 2,000 nautical miles at, a cruising speed of 13 knots.

The clean, modern interior is finished in neutral shades with plenty of warm wood detailing. The high volume full-beam main deck features the salon and a formal dining room, divided by the impressive main staircase. The large master suite is also on the main deck, located forward, features a large en-suite bath. Guests are accommodated in four cabins, 2 VIP and 2 twin, located on the lower deck, each en-suite baths.

Dubai Believes in Magic

Dubai Magic
The company, a subsidiary of the awkwardly-named Dubai World Company Dry Docks World, built the world’s largest yacht, the 531-ft. Dubai, for the Emir, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum. Platinum has also now completed Dubai Magic, an elegant 45-metre three-masted schooner. Originally built by Aegean Yachts in Bodrum, Turkey in 2002 as a passenger ship, beginning in 2006 Platinum stripped the craft and converted it into a luxurious sail-powered superyacht backed by twin Caterpillar 3406C 480 hp diesel engines.

Under power she maxes out at 12 knots, with a cruising speed of 10.5 knots and a range of 1,100 nautical miles. Her 600 square metres of sail do the rest. 346 square metres of outdoor entertaining space are balanced by 339 square metres of interior amenities. Dubai Magic’s has 12 guest cabins in addition to an owners suite. There’s an 8-person outdoor dining area as well as a 14-person indoor one.

Benetti Launches 65M Silver Angel

Silvang
Italy’s Benetti has just launched the new 65-metre superyacht Silver Angel from its Livorno shipyard, the first of the year. Naval architect Stefano Natucci designed the sinuous, streamlined aluminum superstructure and steel hull as well as the interiors in conjunction with London-based Argent Design. That involved some serious squandering of luxury materials: 1,200 square metres of black glossy oak and 700 square metres of marble: fine white onyx for the interior and travertine for the external areas.
No wonder the company describes it as “peculiar opulence.” The Silver Angel can accommodate up to 32 people; 14 guests are fitted into 7 cabins (2 twin, 3 double, 1 master and 1 VIP), with space left over “” hell, even a little of that glossy black oak “” for up to 18 crew. Meanwhile, Benetti has also announced the first hull from it’s wild new Imagination line, a 47-metre yacht built exclusively from aluminum reached Livorno last week, and is currently under fitting for its 2010 delivery date.

Statement! Marine Debuts Ultimate 42

Statement
Florida-based Statement! Marine just unveiled their new custom high-performance V-bottom speedboat, the Ultimate 42. Launched during the Poker Runs America season opener in St. Petersburg, FL, the entire helm and seating area of the 12.8-meter powerboat rides on an exclusive patent pending shock absorbing system, mitigating the jarring impact typically experienced by V-bottom hulls in rough seas.

Powered by ultra-smooth Mercury Racing 1075 SCi engines, at 137-plus mph, the boat is very stable and requires almost no wheel input. At 125 mph with five passengers, it rides like a supercharged Rolls-Royce. The Ultimate 42 is extremely “user-friendly,” with scarcely a hint of chine-walk or porpoising, and the nose doesn’t dive when you chop the throttles. Of course, it also looks like something out of Miami Vice, but some people seem to like that.

Parmigiani Fleurier for Pershing Yachts

Parmigiani

Building on the success of its range of timepieces for Pershing Yachts launched last year “” including the limited edition “one-one-five”, inspired by the Pershing 115, the Italian shipyard’s most prestigious model “” Swiss watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier have just announced two striking new models: the Pershing Chronographe zero-zero-two and Pershing Tourbillon ajour. The case of the former is available in steel, 18 carat white gold or rose gold. Its Calibre Parmigiani PF 334 in-house automatic movement offers chronograph indications combined with a large date display window.

The Tourbillon ajour is a much flashier piece. Its cage, visible on both sides of the movement, rotates every 30 seconds, giving much greater setting constancy. The main plate reveals the mechanism wheels and the double barrel. Numerous openings have also been made on the bridges (barrel bridge, power reserve bridge, intermediate wheel lower bridge and ratchet bridge). The wrist-going equivalent of a superyacht, only 40 pieces are being produced in palladium 950, including 10 models featuring a bezel set with baguette cut diamonds. The yacht costs extra “” but then, what doesn’t?

Maltese Falcon

Malteseop
The 88-metre cutter is a masterpiece of technology and design. There are 2,400 square meters of sail on this baby; her unstayed carbon fibre rotating Falcon Rig and unique fully retractable sails are affixed to custom Perini-built carbon fibre yards and carbon masts. That makes for unrivaled performance, maneuverability and record-shattering speed, with Atlantic crossings achieved in just 10 days.

The highlight of the ultra-modern, understated interior is an atrium where the three decks are united by a circular stairway surrounding the main mast creating a spiraling effect, enhanced by natural light cascading from the top to the lower decks through transparent floors. The main deck is a wide open space featuring a main saloon, an enormous aft cockpit, two separate studio areas and a majestic dining room. There are accommodations for 12 guests and 16 crew, and the owner’s cabin on the upper deck has a private cockpit, a protected sun bathing area.
