Famous drawing The Scream will be auctioned

Sotheby’s auction house in New York has announced that Edvard Munch’s masterpiece “The Scream” will be auctioned off in Spring this year. The 1895 artwork is one of the most recognized and it depicts a man holding his head while screaming under blood-red sky. It is one of the four versions and this one belongs to Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen. This is the only drawing of The Scream that has been held privately. The other three drawings are owned by National Museum and Munch Museum in Oslo.

This particular version of The Scream is pastel-on-board and therefore is more vibrant and colorful than the other three. It also includes a hand-painted frame and poem by Munch which explains the inspiration for the drawing.

Rembrandt’s iconic ‘The Night Watch’ painting

Rembrandt's iconic 'The Night Watch' painting

If you are travelling to Netherlands, you just cannot ignore the works of Rembrandt. The Dutch painter was also known to be a master at etching artworks. The Night Watch (also known as Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch) which is considered to be one of his famous artwork, dated to 1642 has just got a new lease of life. A part of Rembrandt’s exhibit at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum the painting looks more like a stunning photograph rather than a dated and corroded. The latest LED lighting system changes the The Night Watch to a pretty broad-daylight image instead, and the entire set up took three months in the making. The light basically imitates an afternoon sunlight even though the image is facing west. The museum did plan to put the art in natural sunlight that would have aged the painting faster, and would need more efforts to maintain in case of rains.

A $3 million painting by U.S. artist Brice Marden was destroyed while being moved from Moscow to New York due to the negligence of Lufthansa Cargo and others involved in its transport, a lawyer said on Friday. Marden’s “Au Center” came loose in its travel frame while being transported in 2008, resulting in “a significant amount of paint loss” and the destruction of the painting.

The gallery, which owned the painting, initially sued Lufthansa, Art Crating Inc. and others in New York state court in June, but the case was moved without objection to Manhattan federal court on Friday. Lufthansa and Art Crating Inc. did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Au Center,” painted in 1969, is a two-panel work in two shades of grey. Marden, 70, was the subject of a retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 2006 and the same year the New Yorker magazine called him “the most profound abstract painter of the past four decades.”

$150 Million Leonardo da Vinci Painting Not Real?

Arts & Culture: Leonardo da Vinci’s “La Bella Principessa” may not be the work of the renowned 15th century renaissance man. The painting, which is valued at $150 million, instead may be the work of 19th century German artist Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, according to Fred R. Klein, president of Klein Art Research Associates in Santa Fe, NM. Mr. Klein is an independent art historian known for his various discoveries of lost art. Klein’s finding of a drawing by Schnorr, “Half-Nude Female,” in the collection of the State Art Museum in Mannheim, Germany, put his investigative process in motion. Klein claims that the Mannheim drawing depicts the identical young woman with related braided hair as the “Principessa.”Julius Schnoor von Carolsfeld, who lived from 1794-1872, is one of the relatively unknown Nazarene Brotherhood of German painters who worked in Rome and copied the styles and subjects of Italian Renaissance masters.

Klein previously has uncovered four unsigned drawings and one painting by other Nazarene artists in his investigative endeavors. Those drawings and collections are displayed in museum collections that include New York’s Morgan Library and the Frances Lehman Loeb Museum at Vassar College. ”The Mannheim drawing depicts the identical young woman with related braided hair as the “Principessa,” and it’s drawn on the identical vellum as well. Vellum, or parchment, is an eccentric material for drawing, which Schnorr often used, and Leonardo never used. Two other Schnorr drawings on vellum are at Mannheim. The “Principessa” recreates the exact woman, idealized in the manner of a Renaissance engagement portrait – possibly a gift from Schnorr to a favorite model.

In his newly released book The Lost Michelangelos, Mr Forcellino wrote: “No-one but Michelangelo could have painted such a masterpiece.”
